This course will assist recreational vehicle owners (5th wheel or motor-home) on the proper handling of their RV's and make them more comfortable on the roadways and campgrounds. It will also prepare owners for their road test for their code 51 endorsement on their license for 5th wheels weighing over 4,600 kg. This training is conducted on your RV. We encourage both husband and wife to participate in this training. • 4 Hours of behind-the-wheel training • Pre-Trip Inspection • Electrical Brakes; how they work and when to apply • Skid control • Backing procedures • Left and Right positioning & turns • Mirror usage • Communication - using hand signals FAQ's Question: How much can I tow with a class 5 license? Answer: A Class 5 or 7 allows you to tow a trailer weighing up to 4,600 Kg. (10,120 pounds). Question: What if I want to tow a trailer that weighs more then 4,600 Kg. ? Answer: If your trailer weighs more then 4,600 Kg. and you have a Class 5 license, you will need to upgrade your license. A Class 7 license, which is for new drivers, cannot be upgraded to permit towing a heavy trailer. Question: How do I upgrade my passenger license so I can tow a heavier trailer without air brakes? Answer: There are three options available for upgrading your Class 5 license. One is to apply for a House Trailer endorsement (Code 51). This will allow you to tow recreational house trailers of any weight. The second option is to apply for a Heavy Trailer Endorsement (Code 20). This will allow you tow any kind of trailer of unlimited weight provided it doesn’t have air brakes. The third option is to apply for a Class 1, 2 or 3 commercial license. Question: What do I have to do to apply for a House Trailer Endorsement, Heavy Trailer Endorsement or a commercial (Class 1, 2 or 3) license? Answer: Each of these options involves passing a driver knowledge test, qualifying to applicable driver medical standards and passing a road test in an appropriate vehicle combination for the class of license being applied for. Answer: Yes, there are fees for the knowledge test ($15.00) and the road test ($50.00). You will not be charged for these tests if you are 65 years old or older. There is also a fee for your new photo driver’s license. Your doctor may charge a fee for the completion of a medical report. Question: What do I need if my trailer or RV has Air Brakes? Answer: You will need to get an air brake endorsement. If the trailer weighs over 4,600 Kg., you will also need a Class 1 driver’s license. Question: Need more information?
